I am still puzzled as to why Thomas Gohel posts this to
alt.lang.powerbasic but not to comp.lang.basic.powerbasic.
comp.* newsgroups are available to more users; many
universities don't carry alt.* groups.

They don't? Why not? comp.* can be just as chaotic as alt.*

It's not a matter of how chaotic the content of the groups is,
but rather how chaotic the naming of groups is. In theory,
every newsgroup in comp.* has shown itself to be of interest
to a large number of users. In alt.*, anyone can create a
newsgroup.

BTW, is it possible that Thomas Gohel doesn't speak English
and thus cannot read my comment above?

That's a little bit varying <g>. Of cource, english is not my
mother tongue. I can read the language very well, but what am
really missing is a lot of practice in natural live. So it's
my english quite rough and sometime nothing for Bob's sensitive
mentality (the reason of lots of misunderstandings, I think).

I don't know, really, but a.l.p. was the first and oldest
PowerBASIC newsgroup (c.l.b.p started at the end of 1998).
I've never added or changed the config in my newsreader since
that time.

Mhhh, I think with the 10'th birthday of this PBFAQ we should
post the PBFAQ to c.l.b.p, too. ;-)

Hello -
I'm just a PowerBasic newbie. Been using Clarion since 1991
(www.softvelocity.com). How long has PowerBasic been around? Just
curious.
According to the Internet sources I've found:

The original was sold as Borland Turbo Basic in 1987. After either:

1. Borland decided it couldn't compete with MS in the BASIC arena or
2. Borland and MS made a deal that MS would drop Quick Pascal if Borland
would drop Turbo Basic

The original creator of Turbo Basic, Bob Zale, then got the rights to Turbo
Basic back and renamed it PowerBasic.
That would've been about 1990.

It is worth noting that, unlike many decades-old languages, PowerBASIC
has been continually improved by the original author. An especially
brilliant move was the decision to make three flavors; one for DOS with
the usual memory limitations, one that does "Windows Style" visual
programming with all the buttons, etc. and one that works from the
command console giving the programmer pure raw computing power.

I think that's absolutely correct, Tom. I bought my first PowerBASIC
compiler in these days, with a german manual, and it was printed in
1990. The product was called "PowerBASIC basisversion".
